How to Learn

Learning starts with hearing, seeing, or experiencing new information/concepts/ideas.
Alone, though, this beginning step is not enough to actually learn something new.

This may be disappointing to those students who just want to sit back and let the teacher "teach" them! But think about it - sitting back and believing that others have the responsibility to teach you means that you are passive (the opposite of taking control)!  An education is one of the most powerful things we can use to make our world better (for ourselves and others), so it makes sense to wake up and take control of your own learning.

Here are the steps to owning your education:
  1.  SHOW UP EVERY DAY so that you can experience the new learning that your teachers are sharing.
  2. ASK QUESTIONS. Your brain cannot and will not remember things that don't make sense! Your teachers can't read your mind and answer your questions unless you say them out loud. This is your responsibility.
  3. PRACTICE the new learning. The old saying that "practice makes perfect" isn't quite right. A better saying is that PRACTICE MAKES PERMANENCE. Without some sort of practice, your new learning will be gone! Teaching others is the best way to make new learning permanent.
  4. BELIEVE THAT YOUR EDUCATION IS A TOP PRIORITY, and make decisions based on that belief. Nobody really knows what your life is like and what things affect your life negatively that are out of your control to change. That's why it's important to control the things that you can. Who you choose as friends is important, because we all need a support system that is separate from our family. If you have friends that encourage you to be your best self, then you are lucky. If you don't, see if you could change that. When and where you choose to study/practice is hopefully something you can control as well.
  5. BE KIND TO YOURSELF. Sometimes this is the hardest thing to do, but try anyways. Being kind to ourselves means that we spend some time with ourselves and listen to our thoughts and ideas for what we want our life to look like, and then we try our best to make decisions that honor those thoughts.
